He may not look like much, but he can stop a shopping mall dead in it's tracks. We give you the NJ State-Endangered, Blue-Spotted Salamander. Shy & elusive, they rise from their poorly understood subterranean habitats for a week or two each spring to frolic in select vernal pools, lay eggs, and vanish like ghosts. Note the blister-like structure on top of it's head. Known as the "Parietal Eye", this organ is sensitive to light, and among other things, helps to regulate the salamander's circadian rhythm.
