He may not look like much, but he can stop a shopping mall dead in it's tracks. We give you the NJ State-Endangered, Blue-Spotted Salamander. Shy & elusive, they rise from their poorly understood subterranean habitats for a week or two each spring to frolic in select vernal pools, lay eggs, and vanish like ghosts. Note the blister-like structure on top of it's head. Known as the "Parietal Eye", this organ is sensitive to light, and among other things, helps to regulate the salamander's circadian rhythm. Taken at the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.
